Latin Dance vs Ballroom: What’s the Difference?
If you’ve ever Googled “ballroom dancing,” you’ve probably ended up even more confused. Is Latin dance part of ballroom? Are Cha Cha and Waltz from the same family? And why does every dance movie seem to just call everything “salsa”?
Let’s clear this up once and for all. Latin dance and ballroom dance are related, but they’re not the same thing. Think of them like cousins who both show up to the party, but one’s wearing sequins and the other’s in a tux.
Ballroom Dance 101
“Ballroom” is actually a big umbrella term. Traditionally, ballroom dance is split into two main styles:
international Standard or Ballroom – Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep.
international Latin Ballroom – Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, Jive.
Confusing? Yep. The term ballroom includes Latin dances when we’re talking about competitive ballroom dance. But outside of competitions, “ballroom” often just means waltzy, formal dances you’d see at weddings or on Dancing with the Stars.
additionally, here in the usa, we also have ‘american smooth’ and ‘american rythym’:
american smooth – Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz.
american rythym – Cha Cha, rumba, swing, bolero and mambo.
these styles have been added to over the years, with their own characteristics that seperate them from the international styles! more on that later!
Latin Dance 101
Latin dances are fiery, rhythmic, and expressive. They’re built on body action, rhythm, and personality. Here’s a quick breakdown of the main styles you’ll learn at our studio:
Cha Cha – Fun, flirty, with quick footwork.
Rumba – Slower, romantic, with smooth hip action.
Samba – Energetic and bouncy, like a dance party in Rio.
Paso Doble – Dramatic and powerful, inspired by Spanish bullfights.
Jive – Fast, swingy, and full of kicks and spins.
Latin is about storytelling, musicality, and performance. It’s less about looking royal and more about owning your energy.
The Key Differences
Posture and Frame: Ballroom (Standard) dancers maintain a formal, upright frame with a partner connection that looks like a royal portrait. Latin dancers have more freedom, with fluid body movement and sharper, rhythmic action.
Music: Ballroom dances are often set to classical or smooth orchestral music. Latin is all about drums, percussion, and that addictive beat.
Vibe: Ballroom says, “Good evening, shall we dance?” Latin says, “Let’s turn up the music and have some fun.”
Which Style Is Right for You?
If you love grace, elegance, and the feeling of floating, start with ballroom.
If you’re into high energy, spice, and fun rhythms, Latin is your thing.
Or… do both. Many dancers at Brooklyn DanceSport Club LA train in both styles and love the balance.
Ready to Try Latin (or Both)?
You don’t have to pick a lane right away. Our beginner classes give you a taste of each styles, and you can always branch into one or the other, once you’re hooked (spoiler: you will be).

Daniil continues to train, compete, and evolve, bringing not just technique but a mature artistic perspective to everything he does. Whether he's on the floor or in the studio, his work ethic and passion are clear — and we’re excited to be part of his journey.
Do I Need a Partner to Take Dance Classes? (Spoiler: No)
Let’s just get this out of the way: you do not need a partner to start dancing at Brooklyn DanceSport Club LA.
In fact, most of our students come alone. And most of our classes are designed that way.
We get this question a lot—usually from people who are on the edge of signing up, but feeling unsure. Ballroom dancing sounds like a couples activity, and that can be intimidating if you don’t have a built-in partner or you’re not ready to pair off with someone just yet.
But here’s the truth: showing up solo might actually be your greatest advantage.
Most Classes Are Designed for Individual Learning
While some people imagine ballroom dancing as a constant waltz in someone’s arms, that’s not how most classes are structured—especially in Latin. In our beginner and intermediate group classes, a large portion of the time is spent on solo drills, timing, technique, and movement patterns you can do completely on your own.
We focus on building coordination, strength, rhythm, and style in your own body first. Learning to dance well with yourself is the foundation for dancing well with a partner later.
What About Partner Work?
We do introduce partnering in some classes—especially in our smooth or ballroom-focused sessions—but it’s built into the flow in a low-pressure way. You won’t be left standing awkwardly in the corner. We rotate often, give clear instruction, and our teachers are there to guide you through every step.
You’ll never be forced into anything. You’re welcome to opt out of rotating or let us know what makes you comfortable.
Coming Solo Builds Confidence
There’s something powerful about walking into a dance class alone and letting yourself try something new. It builds confidence. It gets you out of your head. It lets you focus on your own progress.
A lot of students say they actually prefer coming alone because it allows them to take in more, learn faster, and meet new people without any pressure.
Still Nervous?
Totally fair. But just know:
You won’t be the only one without a partner.
You will be supported by your teacher and classmates.
You might just love the freedom of learning solo.
Most of our regulars started the same way you’re thinking about starting—nervous, unsure, and partnerless. Now they’re dancing confidently, competing, performing, and having the time of their lives.
Your First Step? Just Show Up.
That’s it. Just show up. We’ll take it from there.
Check out our beginner class schedule and come see what it’s like. You don’t need a partner—you just need to start.
What to Expect in Your First Latin Dance Class
Walking into your first Latin dance class can feel like a mix of excitement and what-am-I-doing-here nerves. That’s totally normal. But the truth is, you don’t need rhythm, a partner, or even the right shoes to get started — you just need to show up.
At Brooklyn DanceSport Club LA, we welcome beginners every week, and we know how to make your first class feel comfortable, challenging, and fun. Whether you’ve danced before or not at all, here’s what you can expect when you walk through our doors.
The Vibe: Welcoming, Energetic, Supportive
The first thing you’ll notice? The music. Latin rhythms are alive — think Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, and Jive. Then you’ll notice the energy in the room: students of all levels, instructors who actually remember your name, and a space that feels equal parts professional and playful.
This isn’t a competitive audition. It’s a class. You’re allowed to mess up, laugh, and surprise yourself.
What to Wear (Spoiler: You Don’t Need Sequins Yet)
Come as you are. Seriously.
Comfortable clothing you can move in (no jeans, no mini skirts, nothing too tight)
Smooth-soled shoes — ideally something that won’t grip the floor (no running shoes)
A water bottle — yes, you’ll sweat
Optional: a small towel or change of shirt if you're extra-prepared
Once you fall in love (which... you probably will), we can help you choose the right dance shoes. But for now, just be comfortable.
Class Structure: How It All Works
A typical beginner Latin class at our studio follows a simple, stress-free structure:
Warm-up – Loosen up your body with some rhythm drills or body movement exercises.
Technique + Timing – You’ll learn the basic steps of a particular Latin dance, along with timing and rhythm.
Short Combo or Routine – We usually put it all together in a little combination at the end. Nothing too serious, just a way to dance it out and feel the music.
Q&A or Freestyle Time – Got questions? We love answering them. And there’s often time to try the steps again, solo or with a partner.
Do I Need a Partner?
Not at all.
Many students come alone. Some bring friends. Some come with a partner and end up dancing with everyone anyway.
Coming solo is also an advantage. It lets you focus on your dancing, your balance, your rhythm. And honestly? Everyone’s too focused on their own feet to worry about yours.
Will I Be the Only Beginner?
Definitely not.
Our beginner Latin classes are designed for people who are just starting out — no experience necessary. Everyone is learning. Everyone remembers their first class. There’s no pressure to perform, just to participate.
What You’ll Leave With
New steps in your body
A better understanding of rhythm and movement
A rush of endorphins (seriously, it's addictive)
A few laughs and maybe a new friend or two
And probably... a plan to come back next week
Ready to Dance?
Our beginner classes run weekly, and your first one is often the hardest — only because it’s new. After that, you’ll feel like you belong.
Check out our class schedule and drop in, or reach out if you have questions. We’ll see you on the floor.
Top Tips for Your First Ballroom Dance Competition: A Beginner's Guide to Success
Diving into the world of ballroom dance competitions can be both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. Whether you’re an enthusiastic amateur or a dedicated student ready to showcase your skills, a bit of preparation can make all the difference. Here’s your comprehensive guide to making your first ballroom dance competition a success:
1. Know Your Routine Inside and Out
Preparation is key when it comes to a dance competition. Ensure you have your routine down to perfection. This means not only memorizing your steps but also understanding the nuances of your performance. Rehearse until the routine feels natural and effortless. Practice in your competition attire if possible, so you’re accustomed to how it feels.
2. Master Your Presentation
Ballroom competitions are as much about presentation as they are about technique. Pay attention to your grooming and outfit. Make sure your costume fits well and is appropriate for your dance style. For women, this might include secure hair and makeup, while men should focus on well-fitting suits and polished shoes. Confidence in your appearance will boost your performance.
3. Understand the Judging Criteria
Familiarize yourself with the judging criteria for your competition. Knowing what the judges are looking for can help you focus your preparation on the most important aspects. Typically, judges assess technique, presentation, and timing, among other factors. Tailor your practice to these criteria to maximize your score.
4. Warm Up Properly
Before you hit the dance floor, ensure you have a proper warm-up routine. This includes stretching and practicing your steps to get your body in motion and your mind in focus. A good warm-up can prevent injuries and help you perform at your best. Arrive early enough to have time for this essential preparation.
5. Stay Hydrated and Eat Wisely
Competition days can be long and physically demanding. Make sure to stay hydrated and eat balanced meals before your event. Opt for light, energy-boosting foods that won’t weigh you down or make you feel sluggish. Hydration and proper nutrition will keep your energy levels high and your performance sharp.
6. Manage Your Nerves
It’s natural to feel nervous before a competition, but managing those nerves can make a huge difference. Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or visualization exercises. Remember, nerves are a sign that you care about your performance. Embrace them as part of the process and use them to fuel your enthusiasm.
7. Get to Know the Venue
If possible, visit the competition venue ahead of time. Familiarize yourself with the layout, including where you’ll change, warm up, and perform. This will help reduce any surprises on the day of the competition and allow you to feel more comfortable in your surroundings.
8. Stay Positive and Focused
Keep a positive mindset throughout the competition. Focus on enjoying the experience rather than fixating on the outcome. Remember, every competition is a learning experience, and even if things don’t go as planned, there’s always something to take away from it.
9. Support and Encourage Your Fellow Dancers
The ballroom dance community is supportive and encouraging. Offer words of encouragement to your fellow competitors and accept their support as well. Building camaraderie can enhance the overall experience and reduce competition stress.
10. Reflect and Set Goals
After your performance, take some time to reflect on what went well and what could be improved. Set goals for your next competition based on this reflection. Continuous improvement is a key part of dance, and setting clear, achievable goals will help you grow as a dancer.
So…
Your first ballroom dance competition is a significant milestone, and with these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to make the most of it. Embrace the experience, stay focused, and most importantly, have fun! Remember, every step you take on the dance floor is a step toward becoming a more confident and skilled dancer.
Good luck, and break a leg out there!
