What to Expect in Your First Latin Dance Class

Walking into your first Latin dance class can feel like a mix of excitement and what-am-I-doing-here nerves. That’s totally normal. But the truth is, you don’t need rhythm, a partner, or even the right shoes to get started — you just need to show up.

At Brooklyn DanceSport Club LA, we welcome beginners every week, and we know how to make your first class feel comfortable, challenging, and fun. Whether you’ve danced before or not at all, here’s what you can expect when you walk through our doors.

The Vibe: Welcoming, Energetic, Supportive

The first thing you’ll notice? The music. Latin rhythms are alive — think Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, and Jive. Then you’ll notice the energy in the room: students of all levels, instructors who actually remember your name, and a space that feels equal parts professional and playful.

This isn’t a competitive audition. It’s a class. You’re allowed to mess up, laugh, and surprise yourself.

What to Wear (Spoiler: You Don’t Need Sequins Yet)

Come as you are. Seriously.

  • Comfortable clothing you can move in (no jeans, no mini skirts, nothing too tight)

  • Smooth-soled shoes — ideally something that won’t grip the floor (no running shoes)

  • A water bottle — yes, you’ll sweat

  • Optional: a small towel or change of shirt if you're extra-prepared

Once you fall in love (which... you probably will), we can help you choose the right dance shoes. But for now, just be comfortable.

Class Structure: How It All Works

A typical beginner Latin class at our studio follows a simple, stress-free structure:

  1. Warm-up – Loosen up your body with some rhythm drills or body movement exercises.

  2. Technique + Timing – You’ll learn the basic steps of a particular Latin dance, along with timing and rhythm.

  3. Short Combo or Routine – We usually put it all together in a little combination at the end. Nothing too serious, just a way to dance it out and feel the music.

  4. Q&A or Freestyle Time – Got questions? We love answering them. And there’s often time to try the steps again, solo or with a partner.

Do I Need a Partner?

Not at all.

Many students come alone. Some bring friends. Some come with a partner and end up dancing with everyone anyway.

Coming solo is also an advantage. It lets you focus on your dancing, your balance, your rhythm. And honestly? Everyone’s too focused on their own feet to worry about yours.

Will I Be the Only Beginner?

Definitely not.

Our beginner Latin classes are designed for people who are just starting out — no experience necessary. Everyone is learning. Everyone remembers their first class. There’s no pressure to perform, just to participate.

What You’ll Leave With

  • New steps in your body

  • A better understanding of rhythm and movement

  • A rush of endorphins (seriously, it's addictive)

  • A few laughs and maybe a new friend or two

  • And probably... a plan to come back next week

Ready to Dance?

Our beginner classes run weekly, and your first one is often the hardest — only because it’s new. After that, you’ll feel like you belong.

Check out our class schedule and drop in, or reach out if you have questions. We’ll see you on the floor.
